The Cyprus Unsinkable Unthinkable Aircraft Carrier
Cyprus – From the Unsinkable to the Unthinkable Aircraft Carrier: Past and Present Aviation Stories
Introduction by Chris Elliott….
Having been born during the Second World War, I’ve always harboured a deep fascination with its history. As a young person, I would often visit old airfields across the UK, seeking a connection with the past. Later, after spending several years living in Cyprus, I was delighted to hear from Oz Orman about his latest MPFC video, which delves into the story of Cyprus’s World War II airfields—some of which I’ve had the privilege to visit myself.
I encourage you to watch this outstanding MPFC production, which richly explores the island’s aviation heritage and the people linked to its various airfields.
Cyprus – From the Unsinkable to the Unthinkable Aircraft Carrier: Past and Present Aviation Stories

This new video offers more captivating tales from the island in the Eastern Mediterranean. Often referred to as the “Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier,” Cyprus’s strategic importance has only grown in recent years.
The video sheds light on the island’s pivotal role during World War II, particularly how the RAF thwarted invasion attempts, aided by the support of local villagers who fought to stop military expansion onto their precious farmland. Discover the remarkable story of a little-known airfield north of Nicosia, which gained brief fame during wartime, and learn about a forgotten site near Kyrenia, envisioned as a means to combat the environmental challenges of arson and global warming.
The MPFC channel is committed to meticulous research from a wide range of sources. Through this latest project, it aims to inform and inspire both island enthusiasts and history buffs with Cyprus’s rich aviation legacy, past and present.
