Tymbu to Ercan Airport ...The second Nicosia airport
From Tymbou to Ercan…A Cyprus Aviation Story
Introduction by Chris Elliott..
We have just received news from Oz Orman of another fine YouTube video that Morton Park FC have published and shared, and this is about the ex-RAF airfield at Tymbou near Nicosia, Cyprus that, following its continued development, is perhaps the biggest airport in Cyprus and is located in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

“The journey, not the arrival, matters.” T.S. Eliott
The history and story of Ercan Airport in Cyprus, formerly RAF Tymbou.
An airport is like a reception desk in an office building and sets the standard of what to expect. In 2023, a new terminal building opened after years of delays, hampered by the COVID-19 crisis and infighting. It is claimed to be the biggest airport on the island and features a new 3,000 metre runway. In 2025, the airport saw its 50th anniversary of operation, but no one celebrated or even noticed.
No international flights land at the facility near the capital, Nicosia, due to the political situation on the island. Flights only originate from the Turkish mainland, although you can connect to international destinations whilst in Anatolia. On occasion, non-stop flights have got through, but these are a rare occurrence.
Watch and learn about this airport, which continues to function under challenging political circumstances and is acknowledged by some as ‘Ercan is visible when it suits’, when there is a problem. This is the tale of From Tymbou to Ercan…A Cyprus Aviation Story.
