Do Greek Lawyers Tell The Truth?
Readers mail.…
From Erdin Şakacı…. Nom de plume
Dear Fellow Citizens of our great Turkish Republic: I am writing to you again to share my excitement. One of that brood of mucilaginous creatures from the South of our Island recently made a suggestion that made me nearly choke on my morning bowl of Cheerios. My first reaction was to get out my fly swatter to give him, a lawyer, a good whacking.
Then I thought, is what he said true? But do Greek lawyers tell the truth? After much on-line searching for evidence to decide the point the answer became abundantly clear and could be summarised in two words. Nicos Anastasiades. There, now you know.

However, my subject is Mr Klearchos A Kyriakides*, an academic lawyer of note, and not to be confused with his lawyer namesake, Michalis Kyriakides**, who has been accused of money laundering, stealing clients’ money, falsifying immigration documents, etc. All standard lawyerly fare you might think.
Tell the Truth and nothing but the Truth
In any Court case one is required to tell the truth but also the whole truth. Telling a half truth can be exactly the same as telling a great big Porky. Has my honourable Mr Kyriakides told the whole truth? He has proposed the establishment of a new independent international criminal tribunal, similar to those established for Nuremberg, the former Yugoslavia, and Rwanda, to investigate ‘alleged’ crimes committed by Türkiye and its agents in Cyprus. Now this cannot mean any acts committed by the Ottoman empire whose influence in Cyprus ended in 1878 but only those since July 1974.
Of course, he may be a member of the “Minus 4,004 Club” founded by Archbishop James Ussher in which case he may be forgiven for not telling the whole truth. Archbishop Ussher’s knowledge of chronology was as limited as is that of those living south of our frontier. Just as the Creation did not occur on 22 October 4004 BC nor did all the ills that have befallen Cyprus start on 20th July 1974.
So what are the Crimes and who committed them?
“Klearchos” may believe (although I doubt it) that up to the very dawn of 20 July 1974, Turkish Cypriots lived in total harmony with their superiors, the Greeks, who lovingly bestowed prosperity and security on their troglodytic Turkish neighbours. Then, out of the blue, hordes of brutish Turkish soldiers stormed the Northern beaches laying waste to all crops and buildings, killing all the Greeks they could find and bayoneting unborn babies in their mother’s womb, drinking their blood and doing all the other nasty things that barbarian invaders do. Eventually, due to the magnificent bravery of the great Greek and Cypriot armies, (which, as if by magic, had instantly appeared in Cyprus fully armed) these Anatolian butchers were stopped in their tank tracks. A green line was painted on the ground between them and a new border was created.
Nowhere was the bravery of the Greeks, against overwhelming forces, shown than at the ferocious battles of Murataga, Sandalla and Athlar which took place even before the arrival of the demonic Turks. Here, on 20th July, the heavily armed noble Greek warriors with armoured cars surrounded, captured and took away from these villages all the men and boys, who were virtually weaponless, and sent them to Limassol for execution (a.k.a. to be murdered).
From then until 14th August, an eternity of 25 days, these honourable soldiers took turns to rape all the unprotected girls and women of the three villages. Having run out of sperm by 14th August, they heroically machined gunned to death all unarmed 126 of their victims, cut up their bodies and ploughed them into the fields nearby so that their bodies would not be found by the approaching Turks. These Grecian heroes have justly joined the pantheon of legendary warriors such as Achilles, Aeneas and Odysseus and heaven rings with their praises.
Things to consider
So, Citizens, why do I praise Klearchos? Well I think that his idea is brilliant and should be accepted immediately – but with just a few little tweaks, to provide the whole truth, such as:
- Setting the clock to start when the London and Zurich accords were signed in 1959 and letting the enquiry period run up to now;
- Enquiring into the suborning of the 1960 Cyprus Republic by Greece, its arming of EOKA and Nationalists in Cyprus, its supply of troops, the commencement of war against Cyprus by its invasion on 14th July 1974 and its subsequent war crimes and acts of genocide committed by its forces against both the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots:
- Enquiring into the destruction of the constitutional government of the Republic of Cyprus, by the Greek Cypriot Community, between 1960 and 1963;
- Enquiring into the attempts by the “Greek Administration of South Cyprus’” (GASC) to annihilate the entire Turkish populace both in 1963 and 1974; its sponsorship of the murder of very many hundreds of Turkish Cypriot citizens between 1963 and 1974; the sweeping of the Turkish Cypriots into, in effect, concentration camps and destruction of 102 Turkish villages and hundreds of their religious buildings;
- Enquiring into the loss by Turkish Cypriots, of all their patrimony and civic rights under the1960 Constitution;
- Enquiring into the suborning of the original Republic of Cyprus by the Cypriot Greek Orthodox Church.
If, despite the “Ussher calendar”, none of these things happened then Klearchos should welcome the opportunity to have these claims shown to be false and for them to be thrown into the dustbin of history. After all, as a former English solicitor and highly knowledgeable writer on things legal and political revealing the whole truth is the only way justice can be served. So, Klearchos, you will not be getting a whack from my swatter, just yet.
The Tribunal should have powers:
- to order Greece, the Republic of Cyprus, the GASC and the Greek Church to pay compensation for all those killed, injured or deprived of their property, including the share of national patrimony found around its shores, and the loss of their civic rights;
- to imprison all those, priests included, involved in war crimes, murder, genocide and ethnic cleansing;
- to recognise the right for Turkish Cypriots to decide their own future free from fear of obliteration or subjugation;
- to require the UK and the UN, as well as all the “Respondents”, to provide all relevant documentary evidence in their possession.
I would name this International Criminal Court:
The Tribunal for Truth, Recognition and Reconciliation in Cyprus.
“Reconciliation?” you say. Yes, when the world and the Greek Cypriots, maybe also the Turkish Cypriots, can see the whole truth and express their genuine repentance for their crimes, then we may be able to come together as supportive neighbours in this single Island of “two nations, two sovereign states”. It is too small a place to be at “daggers drawn” with your next door neighbour.
From now our party will be called Iki Ulus Iki Egemen Devlet (2U2ED). Join us. Wave your “2U2ED” fly swats, bat away the lies and hypocrisy, reveal the truth. Fellow Citizens, join the campaign to launch the
Tribunal for Truth, Recognition and Reconciliation in Cyprus.
Will you join the campaign “Mr E.T”? When the time comes….
Vote For Me – Vote for Cyprus Reality
Vote for “2 Nations, 2 Sovereign States”.
