‘Voluntary Emergency Response Units’ in Girne Region meeting held
A meeting was held in the Girne Region to establish voluntary emergency response units for effective response to forest and land fires, disasters, and emergencies. The meeting was held on Friday, September 27, at 11:00 in Girne Municipality Assembly Hall.
The meeting was attended by the Mayor of Girne, the District Governor of Girne, the Çatalköy – Esentepe Municipality Representative, the mukhtars working in the Girne Municipality and Çatalköy-Esentepe municipality borders, the KEMA President, the Gross Civic (Civic Area) representative, the English School of Kyrenia representative and the 19 Mayıs Turkish Maarif College representative.
At the meeting, Girne District Governorate Senior District Inspector Hayriye Oktekin Paralik, Civil Defense Regional Director Coşkun Neşesibol, Girne Fire Department Chief Nazım Haktan and Forestry Department Forest Protection Branch Chief Asım Yırık and Alevkaya Region Senior Assistant Engineer Salih Ercan made presentations.
GERMANY MODEL DISCUSSED
The institution representatives stated that they examined the structure of volunteer firefighting and emergency response teams that Germany has been implementing for 150 years during an educational tour organized in Germany.
In their presentations, they shared these experiences in Germany and detailed how volunteer response units were established. They explained the steps that needed to be taken to implement the same system in Girne and its surrounding areas and stated that this meeting was preliminary information in this direction.
A MORE ORGANIZED AND EFFECTIVE STRUCTURE AT THE LOCAL LEVEL
In the meeting, the work to be done so that volunteers can respond more quickly to possible fires was detailed. The importance of establishing a more organized and effective structure at the local level, especially for various emergencies, especially forest fires, was emphasized.
Following the meeting, opinions were expressed on the training of volunteer teams and how and in what way the logistic support and technical infrastructure will be developed in the continuation of this project. Municipalities in and around Girne stated that they will act in a determined cooperation in the establishment of volunteer intervention units. The meeting was evaluated as an important step taken for the more effective organization of volunteer services in the region and for the public to be more prepared for forest and land fires and disasters.
