Arikli: Let Famagusta Port Be A Base For Turkic States

Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı noted that they are waiting for the result of the application they made a year ago to make Famagusta Port available to the ships of the member states of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) and said, “We want Famagusta Port, which is the most fortified place in the Eastern Mediterranean, to be a base of the Turkish states.”

Minister of Public Works and Transport Arıklı, in his assessment to the AA correspondent, stated that as the TRNC, an observer member of the OTS, they applied a year ago for the inclusion of Famagusta Port in the “Sister Ports” program of the OTS, and reminded that the issue was brought to the agenda again at the OTS Heads of State Informal Summit held in Shusha, Azerbaijan.

Stating that there are a total of eight ports, including two from Turkey, in the “Sister Ports” program of OTS, he said that they are striving to make Famagusta the ninth port of the program

“IT WILL BENEFIT THE OTS MEMBERS AND THE TRNC”

Minister Arıklı pointed out that the share of maritime transport in the world trade volume is increasing more and more every year and stated that the inclusion of Famagusta Port in the program will benefit both the other members of the OTS and the TRNC.

Stating that they hope that their application to the OTS Secretariat for the inclusion of Famagusta Port in the “Sister Ports” program will be accepted, Arıklı emphasized that they expect the support of the motherland Turkey in this regard, as always.

“IMPROVING RELATIONS AMONG MEMBERS CONTRIBUTES TO GLOBAL STABILITY”

Arıklı stated that the development of political, cultural and commercial relations among OTS members will contribute to stability both regionally and globally and said:

“We want Famagusta Port, which is the most fortified place in the Eastern Mediterranean, to be a base for the Turkish states. Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which want to take part in world trade, should be able to use Famagusta Port as if it were their own port. As the TRNC, we want to get a share from the increasing maritime trade in the world and this situation will benefit our country politically.”

Minister Arıklı reminded that the European Union (EU) does not have an official embargo decision on TRNC ports, and stated that they added a letter to their application to the OTS for Famagusta Port, which was given by the Commission as a result of the application made to the EU Commission in the past, with the content of “There is no decision that TRNC ports are prohibited or embargoed ports.”
