The 19th Cyprus Silk Cocoon Festival Held On 4/5th May

The first day of the Cyprus Silk Cocoon Festival, organized by Girne Municipality in collaboration with Beylerbeyi Muhtarlığı and the Green Peace Movement, with the communication sponsorship of KKTC Telsim, was enthusiastically supported on Saturday. The Silk Cocoon Festival, which was held for the 19th time this year on 4th and 5th May , was packed with colourful events.

The festival included handicrafts, food and beverage stalls, and stage performances closed at 19:00 on Sunday with a Beyaz Trio concert.

The First Day Was Full of Activities

The 19th Silk Cocoon Festival was attended by many locals and foreigners. Starting at 10:00 with the opening of the stands and music broadcast, the day featured many concerts, dance performances, silk cocoon exhibitions, and silk cocoon sales, ending at 19:00.

Şenkul: “Beylerbeyi Village, one of the most special places”

Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul, in his speech, congratulated everyone who contributed to the 19th festival, stating that the Cyprus Silk Cocoon Festival is one of the most important cultural events. He affirmed that the real potential and value of Beylerbeyi Village, one of the most special places in the entire Mediterranean, have not yet been understood enough. He added that they will work to promote Beylerbeyi and this important cultural value to the world by developing cultural values belonging to Cyprus Culture such as silk cocoon craftsmanship. They would work in cooperation with non-governmental organizations, silk cocoon breeders, and silk cocoon producers.

Şenkul emphasized that by organizing the main street of Beylerbeyi Village and turning it into a real Cyprus and Mediterranean Village where silk cocoon craftsmanship will be exhibited, they will take another step towards making it happen.

Erhürman: “Silk cocoon crafts have turned into an artistic product.”

CTP Leader Tufan Erhürman congratulated Girne Municipality, the Green Peace Movement, and Beylerbeyi Muhtarlığı for staging the Silk Cocoon Festival and reaching its 19th edition. Erhürman underlined that silk cocoon breeding and silk cocoon crafts have been diversified over the years and turned into an artistic product, which is an economic, touristic, and cultural product. Expressing his great pleasure in seeing that the interest and love for silk worms shown by himself and his peers when they were 5 years old continue in today’s 5-year-old children, Erhürman emphasized the importance of transferring cultural values between generations.

May 5th, Sunday Events Held

The second day started with a delay due to adverse weather conditions. The festival, which was canceled in the morning of the second day due to adverse weather conditions, was reorganized and met with the public when the weather improved. The first activity of the second day of the festival was the planting of mulberry saplings. Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul, Girne Municipality Council Member Ali Tektan, Beylerbeyi Muhtar Niyazi Engin, Green Peace Movement Secretary General Doğan Sahir, Girne Municipality Culture Affairs Branch Manager Aysun Çelik, and Parks and Gardens Branch Manager Mehmet Atak planted mulberry saplings together.
