UK wrong about Cyprus

Introduction By Chris Elliott….

Having received in the past days a number of readers mails requesting we publish their thoughts and opinions on CyprusScene as to why the world should now recognise the injustice done to the Turkish Cypriots, we saw a post by Nick Hudson as under on the Embargoed Facebook page which we are sharing so that this very important message reaches out to a  worldwide audience.

Nick Hudson said on Embargoed Facebook – He was  the former Editor of the Cyprus Star Newspaper in Northern Cyprus.

Turkish Cypriots in London have reminded the world of their devastation and global desolation caused by UN resolution 186 which has left a nation of people isolated for 60 years.

Members from Embargoed and the British Turkish Cypriot Association joined forces to make a quiet three-hour protest outside the Houses of Parliament in the UK capital.

Afterwards they delivered letters to UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and the UN’s London HQ.

BTCA chairman Kenan Yaman told the protest supporters that the UN resolution, designed to help Turkish Cypriots under attack in 1963, had “usurped the title of the Republic of Cyprus”.

He added: “We oppose this resolution which has rendered the constitution of the country null and void.

“We now need to start negotiating on a two-state solution and should have the right to self-determination.”

London Mayor hopeful Piers Corbyn told the peaceful demonstrators the British government had “failed the people of Northern Cyprus totally”.

The elder brother of former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said the “broken” agreements made 60 years ago had left Northern Cyprus “isolated, discriminated against and treated as a pariah” on the world stage.

He said the condemnation of Turkish Cypriots was not just the fault of the British government but “part of a world set up” involving the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, global corporations and warmongers which are “behind everything”.

The 76-year-old said it was time to restore the rights of Northern Cyprus and put it on a level playing field with the rest of the world.

His promise to the dozens who came out to made their silent voice heard: “If I was Mayor of London I would immediately recognise Northern Cyprus, fly there and say hello.”

Nick Hudson further commented:

Turkey Cypriots are prevented from direct trade, travel and communications with the rest of the globe.

Everything has to go via Turkey or South Cyprus, adding time and cost to their activities.

Turkish Cypriots are also denied representation at international political forums and to participate in international events and sports, even friendly games of football with FIFA-registered club opponents are banned.

These problems stem, not from 1974, when the Island was divided following Turkish intervention, but from events a decade earlier when the poorly worded text of UN resolution 186 wrongly describe Greek Cypriots as the government of Cyprus, while downgrading Turkish Cypriots to a “community”.

In one fell swoop Resolution 186 not only destroyed the delicate balance that had been struck between the two separate sides through the international treaties and constitution that established the power sharing Republic of Cyprus in 1960, but also allowed also removed any incentive for Greek Cypriots to share part with their former partners.

The parliament protest leaders added: “The Greek Cypriots have weaponised their ill gotten status as the sole recognised authority on the island to demand the international isolation of Turkey Cypriots, until we capitulate and accept minority status.

“We will never accept that. What is really disappointing is how the international community have gone along with these outrageous demands, including guarantor Britain.

“The UK needs to rectify its 60-year mistake by acknowledging UN resolution 186 has harmed Cyprus and Turkish Cypriots in particular.

“They need to help restore a level playing field for both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots so we can finally end the long-running Cyprus dispute.”
