Çavuşoğlu: “Turkey always supports a permanent solution in Cyprus”

Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu stated, “Turkey has always supported a permanent peace and solution in Cyprus.”

Çavuşoğlu held a joint press conference at the Official Residence of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the inter-delegation and the bilateral negotiations with the Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis.

Minister Çavuşoğlu brought attention to the fact that although Turkey had warned the Greek Cypriot side as well as the EU and the UN in this respect for many years, the Greek Cypriot side persist in drilling activities, disregarding the rights and share of the Turkish Cypriots. He further added that upon realising that their warnings were ignored, as a guarantor state Turkey has started drilling activities within its continental shelf in the areas where Turkish Petroleum Corporation had been granted licence by the TRNC.

He also pointed out, “We are still of the opinion that the EU and the UN should support the protection of the rights of the Turkish Cypriots which should be guaranteed through a commission within the framework of the suggestions made by the Turkish Cypriots and the TRNC.”
