We have many people asking the CyprusScene team for help and advice and recently we were asked by a Russian friend if we or others knew of WW2 British veterans and as we could not give that information we suggested that contact be made with the Royal British Legion, Kyrenia Branch.
It was pleasing to see on the Royal British Legion Kyrenia Facebook page that contact had been made and the following announcement was made.
The Russian Society of Northern Cyprus have invited all British Veterans, who served in WWII, their families and their friends to participate in a planned march in Girne on the 9th May 2019.
The Immortal Regiment procession sees people carrying flowers and portraits of their loved-ones.
It followed Russia’s annual Victory Day parade, which marks the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two.
The parade promoting peace and children started in 2011 and now has 130 countries participating worldwide.
It is non political, non Governmental and Non profit making.
Anyone wishing to attend should meet in the main Square by the fountain behind the Belediyesi at 3.30pm. Medals can be worn and photographs of those that served are to be carried. The procession will start at 4.00pm, walking down to the Ataturk Monument near to the Dome Hotel. (The street will be closed to traffic).
The Royal British Legion will be represented at this peaceful march and our Standard will be in attendance along with our own war veteran Bob Howard.
We will then return to the Colony hotel where there will be :
- A display of children pictures,
- Poetry readings,
- Chronological movie to show the universal struggle of war and singing of wartime songs
- A buffet and drinks are also available to purchase at the Hotel.
If you would like your photograph to be made bigger for the parade, then please take along to Deniz Plaza where a discount has been organised.
