It is always nice to hear from people who find an article we have written in the past and pass on their recollections on the same subject.
The article in question was a memory about Newman’s Farm which was sent to us by Paul Hencher who lived in Kyrenia as a young boy and attended the Army Children’s School, Kyrenia, together with his sister Christine. To read the article click here
This article prompted a comment from Penny Siberry, who remembers Paul and his sister, Christine, and the school they attended, and of course Newman’s Farm, about which many articles have been published on CyprusScene.
Penny has kindly sent a photograph of the teacher at the school, Miss Smith, and some of the pupils. I wonder if anyone recognises themselves?

I read with great interest Paul Hencher’s input on the website. My sisters and I, Penny, Sarah and Bridget Dickerson, remember Paul and Christine. We lived in P.B. Shelley Street too and remember us all attending school with Miss Smith and especially the headmaster, Oliver Talbot, who I now realise was an inspirational teacher.
If it is of interest to anyone I am in touch with another pupil, Mary Lukyn.
Finding this website was prompted by The Antiques Roadshow broadcast from Buckfast Abbey which we remembered was where the Newmans settled after Kyrenia.
I went back on holiday in 2008 and found many changes. Unfortunately P.B. Shelley Street has been demolished along with all the pretty villas and Snake Island has been joined to the mainland. Our former school is now part of the Turkish Army base surrounded by tall trees and is vaguely opposite the Jasmine Court Hotel/Apartments.

We are reproducing a letter, sent to us by Paul Hencher, which Paul’s mother received from a teacher at the Army Children’s School, Kyrenia in December 1958, which we find quite amusing.
So interesting to read Paul Hencher’s & Penny Siberry’s memories of life in Kyrenia in the late 1950s. I have already commented about Newman’s farm which Margaret Sheard has published in Cyprus Scene. We were in Cyprus in 1960 to 1963 living in Nicosia but spending much of our free time in Kyrenia. I was interested in Penny’s school photo. I went to St Michael’s secondary school at RAF Nicosia & Rowena Margosis was in my class (age 11 in 1960) & I was quite friendly with her. Think we other kids thought living in Kyrenia was quite exotic. I never realised there was an army school there, think I always assumed that Rowena’s parents were not in the forces. I can remember going to her house in Kyrenia although have no recollection where it was. I have a photo of Rowena taken on our school outing to St Hilarion Castle. I cannot remember Rowen from my later school years so guess she must have moved away.
