The “World Poetry Day” of UNESCO, (21st March 2019) was recently celebrated at the Near East University. The event was comprised of a panel “The Past and the Present of Turkish Cypriot Poetry”, as well as the poetry being recited.
According to the information released by the University, Mr. Mehmet Kansu and Mr. Mehmet Levent, who are famous story writers and poets were part of the panel, which also included Mr. Altay Burağan, the poet/researcher.
The event was held at No. 4 Hall of the Grand Library of the University.
The event of recitation of poetry and the panel was chaired by Şevket Öznur, the Chairman of the Cyprus Research Center.
Delivering the opening speech at the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Öznur provided the students and guests with information about the three participant authors who have made great contributions to Turkish Cypriot poetry.
Within the scope of the event, the writer-poets delivered information regarding Turkish Cypriot poetry and read their poems, which addressed various emotions. By reading the poems written in various periods of time, the poets demonstrated the alterations and developments in the art of poetry as well as the close relationship between poetry and other forms of art.
