Scorpions sting twice!

By Richard Beale ……….

Esentepe (nickname the Scorpions) scored twice through goals from JUNIOR (penalty) and MAHMUT to continue to keep their heads above the automatic relegation zone places.

With Girne Halk Evi losing and Gençler Birliği drawing, Esentepe made further progress away from the automatic relegation places. Now lying in 14th position 2 places away from the automatic relegation spot, Esentepe have now an outside chance of avoiding the drop via the relegation “play outs”.

This was probably one of Esentepe’s best performances of the season against a team that are in 6th place in the Super League. I feared for Esentepe during the opening 10 minutes as Cihangir started like a train on fire and looked very dangerous. Thanks to a couple of crucial saves from Esentepe young Goalkeeper Onur,  Esentepe were able to weather the storm and turn the tables around and put Cihangir on the back foot. Onur was the catalyst for Esentepe this young “giant’ of a goalkeeper is growing in status every match he has played. His penalty save from Firat in the 65th minute was a turning point for Esentepe if the penalty had gone in then maybe Cihangir may have gone on to win the game. They didn’t and Esentepe got their act together and went on to dominate the rest of the half and come away with 3 crucial points.

Esentepe in red putting Cihangir under pressure

6 mins : Cihangir hit the Esentepe woodwork when Henri Belle their burly striker found himself with a shooting chance at the far post. His shot went across goal striking the near post before being scrambled away by a desperate Esentepe defence.

15 mins : Cihangir continued to impress, the dangerous Belle brushed aside challenges from Vurkan and Yakup on the right before continuing into the Esentepe penalty area, squaring the ball across to Çağlar, but goalkeeper Onur came out quickly to block the striker’s shot.

22 mins : Esentepe first chance came from a long Mahmut free kick, Mehmet Kiliç got up well but directed his header over the bar.

24 mins : Following an Esentepe corner Cihangir broke like lightning, when Henri Belle outstripped Yakup, before crossing into the area to Musa, but agaın Onur coming out quickly managed to partially save the winger’s shot before finally it was cleared by Hasan on the Esentepe goal line.

32 mins : Efosa picking up the ball in the centre circle spotted Junior making a run into the Cihangir box on the left side, his through ball ended up with the Cameroon International striking the angle of the crossbar and post with his shot.

41 mins : Esentepe took the lead when Sükrü on the right just inside the box had his foot taken away from him by Uche and referee Osman Özpasa had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. JUNIOR dispatched the resultant penalty sending Tuğcan the wrong way. HALF TIME SCORE 1-0

54 mins : Esentepe were unlucky not to have increased their lead with a great move involving Kaan and Efosa exchanging passes down the left. Efosa put over a good cross to the far post where young teenager Sükrü beat goalkeeper Tuğcan only to see his effort hacked off the line by a defender.

65 mins : The turning point of the game, Cihangir attacked down the right with Musa coming into the box, his cross hit the arm of Mustafa Kiliç and again referee Osman had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Up stepped Cihangir top goalscorer and Captain, Firat but his penalty was brilliantly parried by Onur who flung himself to his left. Onur also did well to beat away Firat’s follow up shot.

75 mins : Cihangir paid dearly for that penalty miss when Esentepe made the game safe, the unlikely scorer being full back MAHMUT. The overlapping defender played a 1-2 with Kaan who brilliantly found Mahmut again with a pass made by the outside of his foot, the Esentepe player carried on into the box before placing his shot across goal and into the net at the far post. 2-0.

Esentepe saw out the remaining 15 minutes without too many scares and rightly claimed 3 vital points. FULL TIME SCORE 2-0

A tale of two penalties JUNIOR scoring his penalty and ONUR saving Firat’s penalty

SUMMING UP : A deserved win against Cihangir side that were not at their best. Their attacks were too predictable and their final ball was poor.

Esentepe deserved this win, it was a hardworking performance with every player making a contribution. ONUR was my “Man of the Match” keeping Esentepe in the game making crucial saves and of course changing the course of the match with that brilliant penalty save.
