The Turkcell Girne Half Marathon, being organised in cooperation with the Girne Municipality and the TRNC Athletics Federation, with the slogan “We are running for help”, will be held on 14th April 2019.
At the meeting held at Girne Grand Pasha Hotel it was announced that SOS Children’s Village Association, the Adult Special Needs Rehabilitation Centre and Akan Gurkan Education Foundation will be the organisations to which the revenue from the Half Marathon will be donated.
The Half Marathon will start at Girne Kordonboyu and end at the same place. There will be 3 categories of 3, 7 and 21 kilometers. Registration will start in the coming days.
At the press conference, Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü said this is a sporting activity as well as social responsibility and awareness and the Girne Municipality is proud and excited to be organising the event in Girne of the Turkcell Girne Half Marathon in cooperation with the TRNC Athletics Federation.
Nidai Güngördü pointed out that as a result of the initiative, the 21-kilometer course was registered by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and International Marathons and Distance Racing Association (AIMS). Güngördü said it is hoped to bring Half Marathon runners from abroad next year through international efforts. He thanked Northern Cyprus Turkcell for their sponsorship for the second time and the support of all institutions and organizations, and invited everyone to join the marathon.
Northern Cyprus Turkcell General Manager, Harun Maden, stated that they are happy to be the sponsor for the Girne Half Marathon again this year. He also reminded that the Half Marathon, which took place last year and which has a social responsibility, was held in a festive atmosphere together with participants of all ages and areas. He said that the Girne Half Marathon course, with IAAF approval, will play an important role in gaining an international qualification in later periods. He also noted that during the half marathon, Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell will offer free wi-fi service.
Halil Samani, President of the TRNC Athletics Federation, thanked the stakeholders of the event and emphasized that it is very important for the half marathon course to have approval from IAAF and AIMS. Halil Samani pointed out that the participants who will compete in the 21 kilometers will have the approval of the international associations and congratulated the Municipality of Girne for this important approval.
Arkın Creative Arts and Design University Vice Rector Professor Doctor Uğur Yozgat stated that the event will gain meaning through participation by the public and will continue to participate in such social responsibility projects as the university, which will contribute to the promotion of the country and add value to the country.
Ramadan Cemil Businesses Corporate Communication and Human Resources Manager, Yeşim Özenirler Alagöz, stated that they will continue to contribute to social responsibility projects that support the country’s sport, culture and art, and added that they are happy to contribute to the event again this year.
Pasha Hotels General Manager, Kemal Uresin, said they would continue to support the event, as they did last year.
Özlem Özbek Eminoğlu, Magic Touch Group Director, stated that they are happy to contribute as a sponsor in the second year of the event and said that it is very meaningful that the income to be obtained from the organization will be used for education of children and young people in 3 different institutions. Eminoğlu pointed out the importance of sponsorship in social responsibility projects and expressed that it is gratifying that the number of sponsors this year has doubled.
The President of the SOS Children’s Village Association, Dervis Çerkez Güryel, thanked the Municipality of Girne and the sponsors and participants and said that they directly and indirectly contributed to 1,627 youth and children through family empowerment programs.
Leyla Yorgancıoğlu, Officer at the Adult Special Needs Rehabilitation Centre, stated that they will use all the income they will receive from the event for the education of young people with disabilities.
Ayşe Gürkan, member of the Board of Trustees of the Akan Gürkan Education Foundation, which was established in 2017, stated that the Foundation provided education scholarships to 5 children last year.
