Signs placed in the Girne Baldoken Ottoman Cemetery

Girne Municipality and Cypriot Vakif Administration Coordination have arranged for signs “Ottoman Baldoken Cemetery” and “Sheikh Sayyid Efendi Water Cistern” to be placed in the Girne Ottoman Baldoken Cemetery, which are in keeping with the area.

Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü stated that the cemetery was used by the Ottomans in the 16th century as a military burial site and in the 19th century it was also used as a public burial place for the homeless and destitute. Nidai Güngördü stated that there was a mausoleum of the Garrison Commander of the Ottomans in the graveyard.

Güngördü noted that the tombs in the area were renewed years later and the cemetery and its surroundings are regularly cleaned and flowers planted throughout the year.
