8th Annual Esentepe Fun, Run and Ramble : Review

By Sue Steel – EFRAR 2018 Organising Committee…

The 8th annual Esentepe Fun, Run and Ramble held on Sunday, 15th April was the biggest, loudest and best ever.

Held at Sea Magic Park just outside Esentepe the main sponsor of the Fun Run, Carringtons’ Group, pulled out all the stops to make this the biggest and the best in the eight year history of the Fun Run.

Hundreds of people turned up to either run or just enjoy the day.  There were over 20 stalls selling everything from soap to cakes from doner kebab to jewellery.

With four runs, 2km, 5km ladies, 5km general and 8km there was something for everyone and one young man, Kai Fletcher, 16, and one lady Vicky Fidd, ran the 2km, 5km and 8km.  Kai has supported and run every year since its inception and even though his preferred exercise is now boxing, the Fun Run and Tulips are very close to his heart.  His younger brother Kade ran the 2km.  Unfortunately, their father, Ian, sprained his ankle so had to pull out during the5km.

Even though, this year, there was no fancy dress, Dave Lavender, dressed as Prince and  representing the Abnormals walked the 8km and members of the Esentepe Football Team dressed up as the Tele Tubbies and stayed in costume all day, all in incredible heat.

The Tree Dedication stand did well and sold a total of 132 trees of which, 60 were bought for TL1500 by Ebru Çağıner who dedicated them all to Tulips.

The presentation of the Carrington Shield keepsake was made to Can Gazi by Burcu Karakaya and Raziye Kocaïsmaïl presented both Mary Watson and Sue Steel with keepsakes for their hard work over the last 8 years.

The Wines of the World hamper, having been drawn three times as no winner came forward, was eventually won by Mary Watson.

Around mid-day the traditional folk dancing troupe from Beyarmadu entertained the crowds followed by the Kangaroo Jumps Show.  Later in the afternoon there was a concert by Ertan Derya and Grubu.

Several serving and former government ministers attended to show their support including the current Health Minister, Filiz Besim, former Finance Minister, Ersin Tatar,  Ahmet Savaşan,  President of the Cyprus Health Tourism Council and the Mayors of Girne, Lapta and Esentepe.

Mary Watson, the EFRAR 2018 Chair said: “We had a fabulous time at the Carrington Sea Magic Park today, having fun, browsing the stalls, enjoying excellent food and drink and, most importantly, raising money for Tulips which supports cancer patients.

I have no idea how much money we have raised – we will be counting for the next few days – but it could be a bumper year.

I need to thank so many people, all committee members who have contributed throughout the year and on the day, Tulips who are incredibly supportive, all at Carringtons, all our sponsors, CESV and the Army for keeping us safe, our registration, tree dedication, race organisers and raffle teams, Michelle Martin who not only ensured the races went according to plan but ended up running the 5km to re-erect a fallen barrier at the 2.5k turn round to ensure that runners did not go the wrong way, Brian Hills, Can Gazi, Tay Derviş, all stall holders, all our volunteers without whom we could not hold the event and Esentepe police”.
