The wires are red hot with the news that Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci had a meeting yesterday with members of the House of Lords including Baroness Meral Ece who commented on social media pages as follows.
“Just back from a very good meeting with Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci, held in the House of Lords. I’m even more impressed by his commitment and sincerity, and all the work he’s done for the Cyprus Peace Talks.
What a pity his Greek Cypriot counterpart couldn’t match his commitment, and walked away.”
When we reflect on well documented statements by Jack Straw, the former Labour Foreign Secretary and others, calling for change and recognition that after 50 years of the UN failure to reunite the island it is time for change because the Greek Cypriots do not want to agree anything unless they can turn the clock back to pre 1974 when they wanted an island under their complete control with a small minority of Turkish Cypriots.
So, over the next few days, more news may come out of the UK House of Lords and we may find more calls for a two state solution and then perhaps the TRNC will be recognised by the world and all of the unjust embargoes will be lifted so that the Turkish Cypriots can at last take their place in the international community.
