For this week’s Vox Pop programme, I went along with my camera crew to Efendi House Restaurant which is tucked away in the old Turkish quarter of Girne to meet Rachel Saunby who comes from the UK and has been in the TRNC for 6 years.

She started to learn to sing at the age of 5 whilst growing up alongside her older  sister and  listening to 70’s music with artists like Bread, 10cc, Pink Floyd and Kate Bush.

Rachel first came to North Cyprus in 2004 and fell in love with the island and returning to North Cyprus about  4 or 5 times a year and she would never want to leave, so when she had a chance in 2011 to leave the UK, she got a one way ticket and has been here ever since.

Rachel said “I love the beautiful scenery and the people who are very friendly and I’m trying to learn Turkish too, it’s a very hard language, but as they say over here yavaş yavaş. For me it’s a dream come true to be in the country that I love and doing a job that I love. I never thought I would become a professional singer at my time of life, but it proves anything is possible”. Rachel sings easy listening Jazz, Soul, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s Music.
