I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to bring you an interesting report on “Discovering North Cyprus” about the Yenicami mosque which is found in the Yenicami neighbourhood of Lefkosa.
The Yenicami mosque consists of two separate buildings built side by side on the site of a 14th Century Cathedral that stood there. This cathedral was converted by the Ottomans into a mosque following the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus.
The mosque that had been the converted cathedral continued to be used until around 1741 when it collapse it is said due to evacuations carried out in its foundations in search of treasure.
The new mosque (yeni cami) was built 20 meters away from the collapsed buildings and has been used to this present day.
This show will be transmitted on BRT2 on Monday 13th November at 19.00 pm and repeated on Thursday 16th November at 19.50 pm. This programme was edited by Kut Adali
