Sunday 15TH October 2017 : K-P League 1

Venue : Çanakkale Muharrem Döveç Stadı.

By Richard Beale………….

A 41st minute goal by striker Hasan Özçelik was sufficient to send Esentepe into the giddy heights of second place in League 1. Esentepe were made to work hard by lowly Çanakkale who had an equalising injury time goal ruled out for offside.

On a splendid sunny afternoon around 50 supporters from Esentepe made the journey to Famağusta, to join the home support of around 50 spectators as well. Since my last visit to the Muharrem Döveç Stadı around 5 years ago, toilets (with paper, soap and towels) have now been installed. In addition a well stocked “Kantin” was in evidence run by a very attractive lady with a rather revealing top on!. (more than one visit was made for refreshments!).

The pitch had the appearance of an “end of season’ look with the goalmouth areas grassless, and the grass in the remainder of the pitch looking tired and well worn.

Esentepe Coach Davut Kansu, caused a surprise by leaving out experienced players Hüseyin and Ahmet. He replaced them with 17 year old Yakup Şen, making his first full League appearance for Esentepe. Also in the side was veteran striker Hasan Özçelik now recovered from a thigh injury.

Çanakkale were the first to threaten in the 10th minute, when Selçuk and Uvanç combined well down the right, before the latter cut inside and drove in a shot across the goalmouth narrowly wide of the far post.

Early pressure from the home team were pushing the visitors back inside their own half. However from a Çanakkale corner Esentepe broke quickly with a 4 on 2 situation. Hasan leading the way squared the ball across to the unmarked Turan, who was bundled to the ground by goalkeeper Umut as he left his goal. Esentepe’s appeals and shouts for a penalty went unheard by referee Mustafa.

The dangerous Hasan powered a Yakup corner just over the Çanakkale goal in the 18th minute.

Lowly Çanakkale were certainly not playing like a team in a relegation spot. Prompted by their very skilfull winger Uvanç Recaioğlu, who goes past players with ease, ensured that the Esentepe defence had to be on their toes.

At 28 minutes Ahmet Altun got the better of İsmail before setting up İsmail Baraktar who skied his shot high and wide.

31 minutes Esentepe giant defender Onur got in a powerful header that goalkeeper Umut did well to palm over the bar.

36 minutes Umut again was in action, pushing a Nersin long range free kick over the bar.

With Esentepe now pressing hard for a goal, they did not have to wait long when they took the lead in the 41st minute. The ball was worked out to Eser on the left, who put over a beautiful low cross where at the far post the predatory HASAN ÖZÇELIK shot home HALF TIME : 0-1

Yakup Şen did not appear after the break and was replaced by Hüseyin Ermiş in midfield. (he was later seen limping so it may not have been tactical)

Esentepe İsmail overlapping from the back went close forcing a corner. From that resulted corner Eser at the far post got in a downward header that was pushed away for a corner by Umut.

Umut was keeping Çanakkale in the game, producing a flying save from a Hasan header.

Esentepe were now dominating the game and very little was seen of the dangerous Uvanç and the rest of his forwards.

Again Umut saved Çanakkale in the 75th minute, keeping out a close range shot from Eser only a couple of yards out.

The warm afternoon had taken its toil on both sets of players, as fatigue set in gaps were beginning to appear on the field.

Esentepe should have made the game safe in the 83rd minute with a quick breakaway they had a 3 on 1 situation. Hüseyin led the charge before finally squaring ball across the goalmouth, where substitute Ahmet only had to tap the ball in. Inexplicably and astonishing he managed to miss the unguarded net from only a few feet out!.

Esentepe were nearly made to pay dearly for this costly miss as deep in injury time Çanakkale forced a corner. This was partially cleared to the edge of the box, where the ball was returned into the goalmouth where I think it was Yunus who tried an overhead kick connecting with the ball which went into the Esentepe net. Çanakkale wild celebrations by both players and supporters were short lived as the linesman who had his flag up for offside. He was immediately surrounded by the Çanakkale players and the goal was disallowed. The Linesman needed a police escort at the end of the game. FULL TIME : 0-1.

A hard working team performance that was greatly appreciated by Esentepe noisy fans. Esentepe should have won by at least 3-0, and nearly paid the price for missed chances at the end. Çanakkale keeper Umut kept the home team in the game, making a number of good saves. A solid Esentepe defence restricted Canakkale to a few chances. İSMAİL UÇAR was Esentepe’s man of the match, he was solid in defence and was always available on the overlap, Hasan Özçelik, worked tirelessly and always looked dangerous and is a great signing, providing he stays fit for the Club.

L-R: Scorer HASAN ÖZÇELİK celebrating, İSMAIL UÇAR Esentepe “Man Of The Match, and Çanakkale Best Player UVANÇ

For Çanakkale, they have now failed to score in their opening 4 matches. They tried hard and with a change of luck, may survive in this League. Uvanç is an outstanding prospect. Striker Selçuk worked hard and Yunus was solid at the back for the home team.
