The Creditwest TRNC Ladies Cricket League opened with a cracking match between the Lapta Lasses and Girne Girlies at the Pia Bella Stadium on Saturday 7th October 2017.
Currently 3 teams will be fighting for the honours with the Doğanköy Dollies joining the fray for the next game in a couple of weeks’ time, with the possibility of Çatalköy Chicks also fielding a team.
Girne’s batting was opened by captain Dot Feszczak and Lynn Holman with their team having lost the toss. The pair put on 15 runs from 4 overs, despite some attractive shots they were out 3 times, with each dismissal losing 5 runs. Next, it was Sarah Sandford and Linda Hurley at the crease, they changed the game scoring at 10 runs/over bringing the total to 55. The final pair added another 17 runs with Gloria Garcia controlling the strike to leave their opposition a competitive target of 73 for victory.
Lapta Lasses reply commenced with captain Steph Routledge and Penny Butcher putting on 18, a very similar position as their opponents had been at the same stage in their innings. The second pair brought together the inexperienced Anniecell Garcia and hard hitting Rannveig Ystaas whose freestyle pairing brought some big runs, but also lost wickets, resulting in their team having only 32 runs as the final pair came in to bat. Gina Mapp and Ayttis Lilianna faced an uphill struggle of scoring at 8.5 runs/over. Still needing 20 off the last over, the umpires were heard to say it was beyond them, but the Lapta girls disagreed and very nearly made it falling only 6 runs short.
Throughout the match catching from both sides really stood out with memorable ones from Linda Hurley, Gina Mapp and Gloria Garcia. Tight bowling and alert fielding from the newbies and the more experienced players kept runs for both teams to a minimum.
Afterwards, TRNC team captain Gina Mapp told us, the girls had been amazing, particularly those who had only just started cricket. Since training started 3 weeks ago, interest in TRNC ladies cricket has doubled the number of people enjoying playing the game. Newcomers of any age are very welcome and experience is not needed, as it’s mostly about having fun whilst keeping fit.
The next coaching session is 11am Saturday 14th October at the Pia Bella Stadium, then continues every week. Please come along, no equipment is needed. Call Gina Mapp on 0533 8332069 for more information.
