The Great Flood at The Soulist Coffee and Music House, Alsancak, Review

By Roland Eyerich and Margaret Sheard …..

Following the kick-off special for April with the “Rock n Roll band with Horns” on April 1st featuring Alper Cengiz and Soul Stuff from Istanbul, the band “The Great Flood” was in Alsancak at the Soulist in the “Small Music Hall” to celebrate their show.

The Great Flood was founded in 2013 and is made up of the Brothers Batural – Kaan Batural (Guitar + Vocal) and Altan Batural (Bass + Harmonica) and drummer Ulaş Öğüç. They refer to themselves as a Blues and Rock’n’Roll band. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter, Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Robben Ford or Eric Clapton form the frame.  Frontman Kaan describes the music of the band as an actual blues band, but for live performances the Rock’n’Roll numbers are a good addition.

Kaan explained the name of the Band –  “The big tide is actually a song by Joe Bonemassa, but also the importance it means for us – force and power – which again is important for a Blues and Rock’n’Roll band”

There were the classics like Pride and Joy, Texas Flood, Worried Life Blues, Talk To Your Daughter, which they played.  The Great Flood don’t only copy these tunes, they put their personal stamp on them.  Kaan, who is 34 years old, is very convincing with his guitar playing and vocals and his brother Altan, 30 years old, playing bass which is steaming and bluesy and Ulaş Öğüç, who is 24 years old, perfectly complements this duo on drums.

They started with the Stevie Ray Vaughan classics  “Pride and Joy” and “Texas Flood” as opening numbers. The band played 2 sets of a total of about 2½ hours and added 3 more at the request of  the audience. Not to be missed was the Chuck Berry classic “Johnny B. Goode” and also the harmonica playing of Altan.

With Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog and Jailhouse Rock and the Little Richard song “BAMA LAMA BAMA LOO”, which encouraged the audience to join in and sing, Great Flood finished this successful evening in The Soulist.

The band is currently in the studio recording their own songs and their CD will be available in 2-3 months.  “That`s why I have the blues” is one of the songs to be heard in advance on their Facebook site or Spotify and Itunes
