Çavuşoğlu: “Enosis is the basis of all problems in Cyprus”
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu reacted to the recent Enosis decision of the Greek Cypriot Parliament, stressing that Enosis, which aims to unite the island to Greece, is the basis of all problems experienced in Cyprus.
Minister Çavuşoğlu mentioned the Cyprus problem in his interview with AA correspondent over the Greek Foreign Minister Kocias’ statements regarding Turkey.
Çavuşoğlu said, “Enosis and the actions of its supporters are the basis of all the pain Cyprus has experienced. Nevertheless, Kocias is trying to present this issue as unimportant. His claims that Turkey is using the latest developments as an excuse to maintain its military presence is a complete lie, and is also exemplary in terms of showing the Greek mentality over finding a solution to the negotiations.
Akıncı: “Other countries in the region will also benefit from a solution in Cyprus”
President Mustafa Akıncı has said that other countries in the region, as well as the TRNC, will benefit from a solution in Cyprus.
Akıncı stressed that friendship between Turkey and the whole island would be positive for the Greek Cypriots as well as Turkish Cypriots, even if only the benefits of tourism were taken into account.
Akıncı warned that new tensions could arise in the region over Eastern Mediterranean energy resources in the case of a non-solution. However, he said that if a solution is reached, the region will benefit from new areas of cooperation for all. Akıncı said that approval of the Greek Cypriot far right group, ELAM’s decision to commemorate the Enosis Plebiscite in schools was not appropriate in the context of the on-going negotiation process, and that it has made the TRNC feel uneasy.
Additionally, President Mustafa Akıncı also received the US Ambassador to Lefkoşa, Kathleen Doherty. The President’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs and History, Dr. Meltem Onurkan Samani was present at the meeting. Although the press was permitted to take some footage, the meeting was held behind closed doors, and no statement was made before or after the meeting.
Denktaş: “The Greek Cypriot side’s intention is to claim not only Güzelyurt, but the whole island”
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Serdar Denktaş has said that the intention of the Greek Cypriot side is not only to claim Güzelyurt but the whole of the island.
In a speech at Güzelyurt Civil Society Platform, Denktaş evaluated the negotiation process.
Criticizing the attitude of the Greek Cypriot side, Minister Denktaş stated that the only way for the Turkish Cypriot people to overturn the Greek Cypriot side’s spoiled stance is to present a united front.
