Blakes Lounge Bar and Bistro, Alsancak

By Margaret Sheard …..

We recently met up with Delia Rushbrooke who, together with her friend Sureya Hayatler, decided to bring a different concept to North Cyprus by opening Blakes Lounge Bar & Bistro in Alsancak where people can meet for a drink and enjoy some conversation in lovely surroundings with background music based on soul and jazz and easy listening.   Delia previously ran a similar enterprise in London for many years and Sureya her business partner has run restaurants here in Cyprus.

Delia and Sureya have worked hard refurbishing the building which has been a restaurant for many years and it is now very tastefully decorated with tables if you want a light bite from the nice menu and a comfortable seating area in front of a wood burning fire.    I remember visiting these premises some years ago when it was under different management and the transformation is very impressive.

Blakes Lounge Bar & Bistro opened on 2nd December 2016 and is currently open Wednesday and Thursday 4pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 12.30pm to 11pm and Sunday 12.30pm to 9pm.  When the warmer weather comes along the Lounge Bar will be open every day from 12.30pm to 11pm and closed on Tuesdays.  There is a nice outside terrace area for the warm summer days and ample parking space.   Blakes isn’t a restaurant but there are light bites and platters available all using fresh seasonal ingredients. Delia also cooks regular hot specials as dish of the day. This will be an ideal place for single ladies to be able to visit for a drink and meet up with others for a chat during the afternoon or evening.   It is not intended to have TV screens with football matches etc. Blakes is somewhere people can visit for a quiet drink with friends and be able to talk together or on the planned future live music nights which will be happening in February to come and have a dance.  It is an ideal place for ladies lunches, private parties and small weddings.

Delia is well-known for her involvement with the Children in Need Foundation, together with her husband Laurence Floyd.    She first came to North Cyprus in 1995 until 2000 and then returned again in 2004 and has been here ever since.   Delia and Laurence had known each other for many years in London where they met at the Jazz bar Delia ran with her sister and they married 3 years ago in North Cyprus.

Sureya was born in England but has lived in Cyprus for the last 25 years and she and Delia have been very good friends for most of those.

It is intended to have a music night at Blakes probably once a week and their first event will be a Soul Disco Party Night on 20th January starting at 7.30pm when you can dance away the January blues or just simply listen to the music played by Jale.   The normal menu will be available and there will be a special chilli with dark chocolate and rice and garlic bread – this sounds very interesting!

We wish Delia and Sureya every success with their new venture.
