President Mustafa Akıncı: “It is possible to change Cyprus’ destiny”

President Mustafa Akıncı stated that “it is possible to change Cyprus’ destiny, which has remained the same for years, and to create a new Cyprus.” Akıncı stressed that “the Cyprus issue has always been considered as critical but this time I think that it is really critical”.

Yesterday morning, the General Council of the TRNC Assembly held an extraordinary meeting on the Cyprus issue, in which President Mustafa Akıncı participated. The meeting lasted about four and a half hours. Akıncı said of the meeting that “Everybody stated their opinions, not as competitors but as participants.”

Akıncı outlined that after leaving the Assembly, he would continue to work and meet with the negotiation teams in the afternoon. He will also meet the Greek Cypriot Leader today as part of the negotiations. “We are going to work together in order to evaluate this intensive process in the best way possible” Akıncı stated.

The Speaker of the Assembly Sibel Siber said that yesterday’s meeting was not open to the press due to the confidential nature of the negotiations.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Kaynak to arrive in TRNC today

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Veysi Kaynak will arrive in the TRNC today as part of an official visit.

Kaynak will first visit President Mustafa Akıncı before being received by the Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün.

Kaynak will also attend the opening ceremony of the Hala Sultan Symposium at the Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University in Haspolat at 14.00.

Kaynak will leave for Turkey after attending a dinner which will be hosted in his honour by the Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş.
