The Creditwest cricket league matches were played on another warm day on Sunday 24th April. The Gentlemen of Girne were playing their fourth match against the Middle East Technical University. GoG’s Captain, Danish Afridi, won the toss and elected to bat first. As usual, Danish Afridi, and Abdul Waris came out to open the batting. It didn’t take long for the GoG to lose their first wicket – Abdul Waris – for just 11 runs. The GoG looked in trouble, but then stylish Naveed Shah came to the crease to rescue them with his very useful 20 runs, made up from one four and a huge six and built a solid partnership of 34 runs with GoG’s captain Danish Afridi.
The second wicket fell at 46 runs when Danish Afridi, on eleven runs, fell victim to a brilliant catch in long cover by Maze from METU. After the fall of the second wicket, Jawad Ahmed came as second down to continue the battle for Gentlemen of Girne, and he had a remarkable innings of 37 runs which was achieved with the inclusion of two fours and two sixes. Finally, Shahzad Malik (Wounded soldier) ended the show with his typical game style and scored 19 runs. Due to the continuity of partnerships, Gentlemen of Girne scored 145 – a realistic target for METU.
Shahzah Malik, one of the best-known all rounders in North Cyprus,, who has played for GoG for the past two years and giving many match-winning performances. Being. in the recent match-winning team of the champions trophy [North vs South], and being nominated as ‘man of the match’ for North Cyprus, he subsequently suffered a quite serious knee injury, and has still not completely recovered.
In reply to the 145 runs, METU Captain Muhammad Muzzamil made a very decent start, but none of the batsmen were able to succeed to build any strong partneships. METU were under huge pressure straight away, when Maz’s wicket fell without him scoring any runs. After that, none of METU’s batsmen could survive against GoG’s thriller bowling and METU were all out for 105 runs. Gentlemen of Girne Shahzad Malik was the top bowler. taking four wickets for 12 runs in 4 overs to make a GoG victory possible. Gentlemen of Girne had won their third match in the Creditwest Cricket League.
