TRNC on Google Mobile Mapping
Internet search engine Google added the TRNC into the countries in mobile mapping application.
Previously, the application only included the names of the places in the Greek Cypriot part of the island, but the new form of the application shows the north part of the island as “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”
The European Commission places ‘Task Force for the Turkish Cypriot Community’ under the direct management of Juncker
The European Commission places ‘Task Force for the Turkish Cypriot Community’ under the direct management of the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Vice-President Dombrovskis.
The European Commission has decided to transfer the ‘Task Force for the Turkish Cypriot Community’, the Commission’s team in charge of the application of the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot Community and of assisting the Turkish Cypriot to prepare for the reunification of Cyprus, to the Secretariat General’s Structural Reform Support Service (SRSS) which will coordinate all the Commission’s efforts in facilitating the process for the reunification of Cyprus.
The decision underlines the Commission’s readiness to continue supporting actively the process at all levels.
The ‘Task Force for the Turkish Cypriot Community’ was set up in 2004 and was part, as from 2014, of Directorate-General for Regional Policy.
Elizabeth Spehar appointed as the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative
It was announced that the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Lisa Buttenheim has completed her term of office in Cyprus and Elizabeth Spehar has been appointed as the new UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
Spehar, the Director of the Policy and Mediation Division at the UN headquarters, is expected to undertake her new duties in mid-March. Spehar had served in the Europe Department at the UN Secretariat from 2009-2015. It was also announced that Buttenheim has been appointed as the Deputy Head of the Department of Field Support at the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
Technical Committee hosts bi-communal seminar on policing a federal state
The Technical Committee on Criminal Affairs organized yesterday a bi-communal seminar entitled “Policing a federal country: challenges and benefits” with the participation of four experts from the USA, Britain and Australia. Two of the experts were from USA, one from Britain and one from Australia.
The opening speech of the seminar was given by the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Lisa Buttenheim, the Turkish Cypriot Coordinator of the Technical Committees Meltem Onurkan Samani and Co-Chairman of the Committee Hakkı Önen and Andreas Kapardis.
The experts shared their experiences with the members of the Technical Committee and the staff of the Contact Office in the UN-controlled buffer zone of Nicosia where the seminar was held.
The speakers shared their experiences and answered questions from the participants, focusing on the legal framework in their respective countries, the power of a federal police and their experiences.
The Technical Committee aims to promote confidence building measures and slowly to acquire experience of federal policing.
