Joining me in The Main Event studio this week is Joan McManners from Arapköy who came to tell us the touching and fascinating story of Birlik the dog who she has taken in after he was rescued in Guzelyurt in September 2015.
The story began when the Hope 4 Pets group received a message about Birlik and as Stephanie Harrison-Croft said ” You should know that …. Birlik is so named because immediately we sprung into action as did 3 other animal groups in the TRNC. This was an incredible achievement in itself that everyone on these groups managed to work, coordinate and communicate together as a “Unity” especially given the language barrier problems. His story has touched many people from all walks of life, cultures, and beliefs. The support for this sad, wrecked, in pain, anguished and desperately needing help street dog, has been remarkable, drawing together the community as one towards the plight of street animals here in Northern Cyprus.
Thus Birlik – Unity (VID – Very Important Dog) was born !”
Since those desperate days Joan McManners has been looking after Birlik and trying to nurse him back to good health and give him a happy life which she will tell us all about.
