Creditwest Cricket League takes shape
The Creditwest Cricket League exploded back into action last Sunday the 18th October, when all 4 University sides met head to head at the Alsancak Stadium, the new home of TRNC Cricket.
The morning game saw TRNC University tennis ball cricket champions Middle East Technical University, playing their first ever hard ball game, battle against an experienced Eastern Mediterranean University side. Batting first, the newcomers put on a decent 117 for 7 in their 20 overs, with the major contributors being Nabeel Ahmed 21 and the stylish Muzammil 33. League Communications Manager Ian Fell thought they had enough and said he was shocked when EMU were skittled for a dismal 55 by Riza and Nabeel’s tight bowling. METU 30 points and EMU 3 points.
After lunch, it was the turn of another new side, Cyprus International University and the Near East University who chose to bat having won the toss. Another totally unexpected result suddenly looked likely when the NEU collapsed to 56 for 9 off 10 overs. Then in walked number 11 batsman Mauneeb who with Tajamal turned the game on its head, 5 overs later they had taken the total to 106, before Mauneeb was LBW to Barbar for 26, an innings including 4 fours and a six. CIU’s reply was a yo-yo affair. At times they looked certain winners, then quick wickets would fall and defeat beckoned, only for them to recover again, fighting for their first ever win. Finally, the inexperience showed and they couldn’t get over the winning line, losing their last wicket on 92. NEU 30 points and CIU 7 points.
With 8 out of the 9 Creditwest League teams now having started their campaign, the 3 pool groups are taking shape:
