Creditwest 2015 Autumn Cricket League
opened with a Bang!
The Creditwest North Cyprus Cricket League opened with a bang at Ozanköy Stadium, last Sunday, as pre-tournament favorites Lefkoşa laid down the gauntlet by producing one of the most devastating batting displays the island has ever seen.
Lefkoşa’s Imran smashed 72 helping his team to a huge 194 runs in 20 overs off Doğanköy’s lacklustre bowling. At times the noise from the stadium’s iron roof was deafening as the sixes rained down. Susan Turner who keeps the scoreboard up to date, said she had never seen anything like it, she couldn’t get the numbers up fast enough, before the next boundary was hit.
Rather than giving up, Doğanköy’s top order fought back and half way through their reply were up with the run rate of nearly 10/over with strong contributions from Sikander 29, Khuram 22 and Kurum Shazid 15. Then the collapse happened with the final wicket falling at 119 in the 17th over.
CIU’s Zimbarbian Lovemore Zambezi being bowled by Girne’s Sharzad
Before the mayhem of the afternoon match, the 18th century sounding team Gentlemen of Girne had played the new multi national team of Cyprus International University in the morning. CIU batted first with their opening batsman being bowled for a golden duck. Followed by a productive stand of 52 between Waqas 16 and Wahab 19 which put the students in a good position. The pendulum swung again as did the ball and the students fell apart with no other player making double figures and the team being dismissed in 18 overs for 85 runs, which looked unlikely to be enough. Girne were never in trouble and cruised home in the 12th over for the loss of 5 wickets, with Naveed top scoring on 18 not out.
The first round’s league points were:
Lefkoşa Fighters 30, Gentlemen of Girne 30, Doğanköy 5, CIU 4.
The next round of matches as shown below are on Sunday 13th Sept and the venue for the matches will be made known as soon as possible:
10.00 Alsançak v Doğanköy
13.30 Near East University v Cyprus International University
