President Akıncı met with leaders of political parties
President Mustafa Akıncı had a meeting with leaders of political parties and their representatives yesterday. During the meeting, Akıncı informed the leaders of political parties and authorities regarding the new negotiation process. After the meeting, the leaders of political parties made statements to the press.
In his statement to the press, CTP-BG leader and Prime Minister Yorgancıoğlu said that they discussed the negotiation process and Akıncı had shared with them the developments to date. Yorgancıoğlu also added that their meeting was a fruitful meeting.
In his statement to the press, DP-UG leader Serdar Denktaş said that Akıncı shared his views with them mutually about the meetings held with Turkey and Greek Cypriot leader Anastasiades since he was elected as President.
UBP leader Özgürgün said they would be following the talks closely and hoped they would be finalised soon. Özgürgün also said that confidence-building measures needed to pave the way for a comprehensive settlement.
Furthermore, in his statement, TDP leader Cemal Özyiğit stated that the positive atmosphere which has started with the election of Akıncı has reflected in the solution and peace process in a short time.
President Akıncı receives 2nd President Talat
During his reception, Akıncı said he wanted to benefit from Talat’s knowledge and experience adding that their meeting held yesterday was a beginning and their cooperation will continue.
In his speech, Talat wished Akıncı the best of luck and said Akıncı’s vision could already be seen to be successful. Stating that the whole world has an expectation for a solution of the Cyprus problem, Talat said he will do his best to contribute to the process.
Turkish Cypriot negotiator Özdil Nami and Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyannis held a meeting yesterday. Their meeting took about 4 hours.
At the end of the meeting, a statement was given to the press. It was reported that experts on the issue to be negotiated will also attend the meetings except the negotiation team. Negotiators will meet frequently and work through supporting meetings of leaders to be held with a minimum of twice a month.
Nothing found in search for Greek commandos’ remains
It was stated that digging, which was started at Lakatamia cemetery on Sunday to find the bodies of Greek commandos who were shot down by friendly fire of Greek Cypriot forces at NORATLAS military transport aircraft which took off from Greece on 22 July 1974 during the Cyprus Peace Operation, ended yesterday and nothing was found.
Greek Cypriot daily Politis noted that nothing was found during excavations for remains of 33 Greek commandos. It was also noted that excavation works were done 41 years after the event and the process given to South Cyprus by the European Court of Human Rights to find the bodies of the Greek commandos.
Greek Cypriot government withdraws 11 Commercial Attachés
Greek Cypriot daily Fileleftheros noted that according to the statement of the Greek Cypriot government, 400.000 euros saving will be achieved in this way. According to the news, AKEL reacted to this situation.
