South Cyprus wants to align with Greece

[South] Cyprus must align with Greece in its battle to change the country’s bailout terms, [GC] House President Yianakis Omirou said on Monday.

Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων//House of Represent“The battle Greece is waging in the EU and the euro zone to change the colonial bondage mentality of the bailout, is a battle for national dignity, national independence, and national sovereignty,” Omirou said in a written statement. “It is a battle for the EU’s principles and values.”

[South]Cyprus must be fully aligned with Greece in this battle, Omirou said.

Other parties have also called on the government to support Greece whose issues will be discussed by the eurogroup on Wednesday.

Cyprus and Greece FlagOn Sunday, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras laid out a list of measures to reverse the austerity imposed by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund and vowed not to extend the current bailout deal.

Addressing parliament for the first time after last month’s elections, he said he would instead seek a bridge loan in the next two weeks to keep Greece afloat.

His finance minister Yanis Varoufakis warned that the euro would collapse if Greece were to leave the shared currency.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday advised Greece’s new government not to assume the euro zone would simply accept all the promises its Tsipras made to Greek voters about scrapping economic reforms.

Speaking before talks with Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) – junior partners in Angela Merkel’s coalition – Juncker told reporters that Tsipras had “only partly addressed” Brussels’ concerns about his plans.

  1. Oh the irony: TRNC has been denied to join EU since 2004, and now South Cyprus wants to opt out, while there seems to be a concerted effort by EU to ‘let TRNC in’. Farcical.
