Heavy rains cause chaos
in North and South Cyprus
Heavy rains which swept across much of the country caused widespread flooding, particularly in the capital Lefkoşa.
The torrential rain which battered parts of Lefkoşa caused roads, shops and homes to flood, in some cases leaving cars submerged under water.
Flooding also took place in parts of South Cyprus.
Around 300 students studying at the Levent College High School and their teachers were stranded at the school after a nearby stream burst its banks.
The trapped students were only able to be rescued hours later with the assitance of the fire department and rescue teams from the civil defence organization and military.
The Minister of Public Works and Communication Hasan Taçoy, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Hakan Dinçyürek and the Minister of National Education Özdemir Berova were also at the scene of the rescue operation.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Sibel Siber also called for more serious work on improving the country’s infrastructure.
