Cyprus dispute – Eroğlu evaluated latest leaders meeting

Eroğlu evaluated latest leaders meeting

President Derviş Eroğlu evaluated last week’s leaders meeting upon his return to the Presidential Palace.

Eroğlu said the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide had attended the leaders meeting for the first time.

The President also stated that the working dinner held on Tuesday night was fruitful for Eide to learn the differences of opinion between the two sides.

Αεροδρόμιο Λευκωσίας // Lefkosia Airport“During the leaders meeting we decided to move forth to result oriented negotiations. For us this is highly important. As you all know, we had completed the second phase and now we need to pass on to the give and take process. We reached a consensus to pass on to the constructive and result oriented negotiations as stated in the joint declaration. Core issues will be taken up at the negotiating table. We will try to pave the way for a referendum with an understanding of mutual give and take and win-win approach” Eroğlu said.

Pointing out that Eide will start shuttle diplomacy with the two sides, he said the discussions will focus especially on the core issues.

Responding to a question whether they will pass on to the give and take process or not, Eroğlu said the result oriented negotiations would only be possible through mutual give and take and win-win approach.

Reminding that the UN Chief Ban on his latest statement stated that a referendum will be held after the result oriented negotiations and the discussion on the core issues, he said it was not possible to reach a conclusion without the mutual give and take process.

“We know the needs of our people. What is important is to reach an agreement which will enable the Turkish Cypriot people to live in peace and safety on these lands” Eroğlu stressed.
