Many people have visited Richard Chamberlain’s previous exhibitions to see his wonderful photography of Cyprus in 1954/55 and he wanted to have the opportunity of showing his work in the eastern side of the island and so an exhibition was arranged in Famagusta to take place from 5th to 8th September at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Centre, a beautiful building easily accessible with plenty of parking space available. Richard would like to convey his thanks to the Mayor and his staff for their co-operation and help in arranging his exhibition.
We both love Famagusta so decided to have some time away from the computer and have a day there to meet up with Richard and attend the opening of the exhibition which was carried out by the Mayor of Famagusta – Ismail Arter, on the 5th September at 7.30pm.
We went first to the venue to have a preview of the exhibition and when we returned to the building after a bit of leisure time in the old city, drinks and entrées had been set up on tables in the foyer and soon the guests started to arrive. There were 40+ people attending the opening, many having an avid interest in Cyprus of yesteryear, the culture of the country and lovers of photography.
Richard was asked to give a speech and this was followed by an address by the Mayor, Richard presented a signed copy of his new book Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life in 1954/55 and Sixty Years Later in 2014 and the Mayor presented Richard with a plaque of appreciation. Then the ribbon was cut and the exhibition officially opened.
The guests swarmed into the exhibition hall to view the many photographs on display. Richard was busy showing the Mayor his work and Chris taking photographs so I positioned myself at the table near the doorway where there were copies of Richard’s two books Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life in 1954/55 and Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life in 1954/55 and Sixty Years Later in 2014, together with his 2015 Calendar, which also includes his wonderful photography. Before very long the guests were viewing the items on display and purchasing copies to take home with them.
It was a wonderful event and hopefully many people in the area will go along to the exhibition to enjoy seeing photographs of the Cyprus of yesteryear.
Unfortunately, we learned that Richard’s wife was not too well when arriving at the departure airport in the UK and so was unable to accompany him to North Cyprus as planned, so it is necessary for him to cut short his visit to North Cyprus and return home immediately following the exhibition. This has meant that Richard has had to cancel other arrangements he had made during his time here and for this he apologises.
