PRESIDENT EROĞLU: “WE ARE WAITING FOR THE GREEK SIDE TO TAKE STEPS TOWARDS PAVING THE WAY FOR THE NEGOTIATIONS”
The TRNC Presidency pointed out that the views of the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the joint statement have been conveyed to the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative – Alexander Downer, and stressed that now the Greek Cypriot side should take steps.
The following has been mentioned in the statement made by the Presidential Press Office:
“We have held meetings with the UN authorities in order to pave the way for the leaders meeting which will resume the full fledged negotiations from where they were suspended. At these meetings we have made efforts for overcoming the continuous oppositions of the Greek Side.
In the latest stage that we have reached, we got the support of the government partners – Prime Minister Özkan Yorgancıoğlu and Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş as well as the main opposition party President Hüseyin Özgürgün, regarding the joint statement. Then I invited the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative – Alexander Downer and his delegation to my office and shared the views of the Turkish Cypriots regarding the joint statement. Resumption of the negotiations is at a really critical stage. Taking the precision of the international community into consideration, I refrain from more detailed declarations at this stage.
Now it is the time of a political decision. On behalf of the Turkish Cypriot people I put forward my political will once more today. Now the Greek Cypriot side should take steps. We are waiting for them to take steps towards paving the way for the negotiations.”
