WALKED FOR NATURE
Following the announcement of the 2013-2014 Academic Years as the “Year of Environment and Nature” by GAU following the mobilization due to the fire disaster in Yeşilırmak, the traditional Academic Year opening was performed through a cortege as a “Nature Walk”.
Following the opening with a lecture given by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Hamit Bakırcı, on the 29th academic year of GAU, a nature walk was held at Bellapais Village Crusader Road.
“10 Thousand Students 10 Thousand Plants”
Significant attention was shown by the GAU Rector – Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Öner, Vice Rector – Prof. Dr. Sadık Ülker, GAU Academic and Administrative staff and also the students for the nature walk which commenced in Bellapais village and continued on the historical Crusader road. Public and tourists also supported the walk along with the new students.
Students, who carried banners stressing the significance of protecting natural beauty, historic fabrics, environment and forests of Northern Cyprus, promised to plant 10,000 trees for the loss of the Yeşilırmak forests.
Students have signified that forests are necessary to be enlarged and also environmental problems are required to be taken care of. GAU students have also underlined that various activities and organizations will support the reinforcement of environmental sensitivity.
