In a major money-laundering indictment unsealed in the U.S. federal court in New York, it was stated that South Cyprus, which claimed in the negotiations made with European Union that money has not been laundered, was used for money laundering.
According to the news of Wall Street Journal newspaper with the heading of ‘Liberty Reserve’s Cyprus Connection’, the indictment charges a group of men with money laundering conspiracy for allegedly operating a money transfer service called Liberty Reserve that moved funds by means of a bespoke virtual currency
According to the indictment, the company in question gave way to move money earned from credit-card fraud, online Ponzi schemes, child pornography and other crimes without being detected by law enforcement.
According to the indictment, after U.S. authorities warned financial institutions about Liberty Reserve, the indictment alleges three suspects — Arthur Budovsky, Azzeddine El Amine and Allan Esteban Hidalgo Jimenez — for emptying Liberty Reserve’s bank accounts in Costa Rica of millions of dollars and transferring the money first to a bank account in Cyprus held in the name of a shell company controlled by Budovsky and El Amine, and then to a bank account in Russia held in the name of another shell company.
In the indictment, it was stated that the suspects whisked more money away by moving it into dozens of shell-company accounts in Cyprus, Hong Kong, China, Morocco, Australia and Spain.
