Cycle Cyprus Challenge – Day 5

 Polis to Escape Beach, Kyrenia

The last day has arrived and our intrepid travellers are on the final leg of their epic journey around Cyprus.

It is the 9th September and I understand they started off from Polis at around 6am this morning for their final day’s cycling around Cyprus and aiming to arrive back at Escape Beach Club at about 3pm.   This final leg is some 142km with some steep hills to battle with.

Chris and I decided it would be nice to meet them on the homeward stretch so travelled to a point just past Çamlibel where we made contact with Paddy who told us they were at Kalkanlı and the team had just started off again after a refreshment break.   On we went and lo and behold there they were coming at us like the wind.  It was a lovely sight to see and there were smiles and waves as we went past them.   We came upon Paddy and Albert loading up the minibus so said hello and turned around to follow after the team, stopping every now and again for them to come into sight so photographs could be taken.

Eventually, we decided to start our way back to the Escape Beach area to await their return to the finishing point and when we arrived we found the UN vehicle with the supporters, which had been arranged the day before, had arrived with a group of the team’s colleagues.   A large UN lorry also arrived to ferry the team’s cycles back to Ledra Palace.

At just after 3pm the team came into view and down the slope to the Escape Beach Club to a finishing line banner and cheers from the supporters.   I must say that after 9 hours on the road the team looked incredibly fit and were still smiling.

We joined them for lunch and everyone was in high spirits and really enjoyed the excellent food.  Later some of the team took the opportunity to go for a swim in the sea and eventually we had to say our goodbyes to a really nice group of people.

 Elysia’s  Diary

We have finished!  The Cycle Cyprus Challenge is officially complete!  Well done to everyone, an awesome effort by all. Thank you to everyone for the support we have received throughout, it helped us all the way….. An incredible 5 days, some highs and lows but everyone enjoyed it (I think)!

So there we are, the end of an incredible journey around Cyprus.  It has been a pleasure following them to the Karpaz and then receiving messages and photos of their progress day by day.   I have nothing but admiration for the determination and stamina in achieving this challenge and relieved that there were no major problems or incidents.

We hope to follow this up with a visit to Ledra Palace later this week to do a brief profile of all of the members of the team before their tour of duty in Cyprus finishes at the end of the month.

The challenge was in aid of The Soldiers’ Charity and it is not too late to make a contribution for this very worthy cause.

The challenge has now raised £2664.63 (107%) with hopefully more pledges to be realised.
