From Cyprus to Peterborough: My First Real Winter
A newcomer’s story
This is my first winter in Peterborough, and it’s been a real eye‑opener. Coming from Cyprus, I thought I understood cold. People don’t always realise that Cyprus winters can be surprisingly chilly — the damp gets into your bones, and the houses aren’t built for low temperatures. But even with that experience, nothing quite prepared me for the cold spell I’m facing here.
The first time I stepped outside on a frosty morning, I felt the difference instantly. The air was sharp, the wind was unforgiving, and the frost on the car looked like it had no intention of melting anytime soon. I remember thinking, Right… this is a whole new level of winter.
🧥 Dressing for a Cold I’ve Never Known
In Cyprus, winter clothing meant a jumper and maybe a jacket. Here, I’ve learned that layering is a necessity, not a fashion choice. Thermal tops, thick coats, gloves, scarves — I’ve become a walking bundle of fabric, and honestly, I’m grateful for every layer.
🏡 Making My New Home Feel Warm
Settling into a new country during winter is a unique challenge. I’m still getting used to my home, the routines, the neighbourhood — and then the cold arrives and demands attention.
Warm blankets, hot drinks, soft lighting, and closing the curtains early have become part of my daily rhythm. There’s something comforting about creating warmth in a place that’s still becoming familiar.
🛵 Exploring in My Own Way
Because of my knee — and the operation I’m waiting for — walking long distances isn’t something I can do right now. At first, that made the winter feel even more limiting. I wanted to explore, to get to know the city, but the cold and my mobility made it tricky.
That’s when I started thinking about getting a mobility scooter.
The idea of being able to get out more, even on colder days, feels exciting. I can already imagine myself riding through the city centre, taking in the sights, or heading to Ferry Meadows to enjoy the winter scenery without worrying about my knee giving out. It feels like a way to reclaim a bit of independence while I wait for my operation — a way to stay connected to the world instead of watching it through the window.
🍲 Finding Comfort in Food
One thing that hasn’t changed from Cyprus to Peterborough is how comforting a warm meal can be. Soup, stews, hot drinks — they hit differently when you’ve just come in from the cold. A hot chocolate in a local café feels like a small victory over the weather.
🧠 Adjusting to a New Kind of Winter
This winter has been a learning curve — not just because of the weather, but because of everything else happening in my life. A new country, a new climate, a knee that needs fixing, and a whole city waiting to be explored.
But I’m finding my way. Slowly, steadily, and in my own style.
Peterborough may be cold, but it’s also full of warmth in unexpected places — in the people, the cafés, the quiet winter mornings, and the small victories that come with adapting to a new chapter of life.
And with a mobility scooter on the horizon, I’m looking forward to discovering even more of it.
