Chris Elliiott says We'll Meet Again at Freiston

We’ll Meet Again in Freiston WW2 Museum

For my second UK Shout, I decided to visit We’ll Meet Again Museum in Freiston, which is close to the coastline near Boston.

When I was younger and raising two young boys, we used to go out on a Sunday exploring, and for me, there was a smattering of visits to old airfields from long ago or forts and the like in Essex.

Having moved home to Cambridgeshire, which I knew very little about, I started searching for places, and We’ll Meet Again caught my eye, so off I went from Cambridgeshire into Lincolnshire and reached Boston before turning off for a short drive down country lanes to Freiston.

Home Front Museum

Arriving at the We’ll Meet Again, Home Front museum, I entered and was greeted by a lady guide who explained all about the Home Front and Civilian exhibits.

Being born in 1944, so many items and pictures triggered my long forgotten childhood memories, and the excellent lady guide explained how important the work and support of women was during the two world wars, plus, of course, the local civil organisations.

1940 Police Station

Next, I called into the 1940 police station and met Paul, the museum owner, who explained how his lifelong interest led to the creation of his museum, and I had the opportunity to view a very interesting display and collection, including a man behind bars.

WW2 Museum

Next, it was a visit to the building housing the WW2 exhibits, including a Lancaster 3D flight sim cockpit and display, and then a fascinating armoury collection, plus so many uniforms, photographs, and personal effects, which, like in the previous exhibition building, was just amazing, and I was met by a number of very enthusiastic guides who talked about a number iof the exhibits.

Ration Book Café

So next it was time for a cuppa and a piece of cake in the cosy Ration Book Café before crossing the Parade Ground with its exhibits and a chance to see the replica Hurricane, as I was leaving.

There is so much to see, so I will be coming back and hope to see more, plus if I feel energetic, a walk down to the coastal area to see the WW2 Gun Emplacements with their searchlight locations and bunkers, all of which are not part of the museum.

So it’s a fascinating visit to the We’ll Meet Again museum, which is open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and Bank Holidays from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, and you can learn more below, and I hope to return for my next August Birthday for one of the August 2025 events.
