Vote in the UK elections
Any UK citizen living overseas can now vote in the UK general election. The previous exclusion for people who have lived outside the UK for more than 15 years has been lifted.
In order to vote you need first to register then, if the registration is accepted, apply either for a postal vote or to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf. All this needs to be done by 18th June 2024. Given the delays in the postal system here in the TRNC using a proxy seems sensible.
To register log on to the government website at:
https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
Apart from the usual personal information you will need 3 pieces of data:
- your passport number;
- your NI number;
- the date and place in the UK where you were last registered to vote.
This last one may be a bit tricky if you have moved around and cannot remember when or where you last voted. The following list of election dates may help to jog your memory
| 15 October 1964 31 March 1966 18 June 1970 28 February 1974 10 October 1974 3 May 1979 9 June 1983 11 June 1987 |
9 April 1992 1 May 1997 7 June 2001 5 May 2005 6 May 2010 7 May 2015 8 June 2017 12 December 2019 |
Once your registration has been accepted you can then either order a postal voting pack or appoint a proxy.
Good luck!
