A Pet Message From Our Girne Schoolchildren

First-grade students from Girne 23 Nisan Primary School visited the Girne Municipality as part of a social responsibility project. During the visit, the students donated the pet food they had brought to the Girne Municipality Animal Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre. The students learned about the operations of the animal shelter and brought home to the community the message “Don’t Buy, Adopt!”

Editor’s Comment:

A large number of municipality and charitable animal shelters are full meaning many abandoned pets must fend for themselves in an environment hostile to them.  There would be no need for any shelters if  there was a culture of responsible pet ownership which eliminated the discarding of inappropriate pets and unwanted puppies and kittens.  Letting children see what can happen to pets when they are abandoned is important. The message “Don’t Buy, Adopt” is a start but it is a “sticking plaster” on the underlying problem.
