President Akıncı had a telephone conversation with the UN Secretary-General Guterres yesterday evening (24th July) upon his request.
According to the statement made by the Presidency, during the telephone conversation, Secretary-General Guterres affirmed his commitment to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus issue.
Expressing his satisfaction regarding the upcoming meeting of the two leaders on the 9th August and conveying his best wishes on the meeting, Guterres also pointed out that the completion of the study conducted on the terms of reference by Lute will also be useful.
Indicating that political will and determination are necessary for the solution, Akıncı remarked during the telephone conversation that the Turkish Cypriot side has always shown such will and determination in a tangible and constructive manner in every respect.
The UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed his pleasure regarding his meeting in September with President Akıncı on the occasion of the UN General Assembly studies in New York. The Secretary-General stated that the process concerning the informal quintet meeting should be planned and prepared rigorously. Guterres also suggested holding a triplet meeting following the UN General Assembly studies and Akıncı responded positively.
President Akıncı will also receive the UN Undersecretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix today (25th July).
