In the scope of the work carried out by the Municipality of Girne, a ceremony was held to present documents of appreciation and participation to those who took part in the restoration and consolidation work in respect of the remains of the historical tower located on the fortification walls at Atilla Sokak behind Girne Antique Harbour.

Girne Municipality Nidai Güngördü, Girne Municipality Assembly Member Seran Kaşif, International Cyprus University Archaeology Director of Cultural Heritage and Conservation Assoc. Dr. Müge Şevketoğlu, Former Manager of the Department of Antiquities and Heritage and Member of the Two-Community Cultural Heritage Technical Committee Ilkay Feridun, and Traditional Construction Techniques Specialist İsmail Cemal attended. Documents of appreciation and participation were presented after the speeches.

Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü said that the back streets of the harbour were part of the city life and that they aimed to increase interest in the region for tourists and residents. Nidai Güngördü stated that they started the work in 2016 and it is in the process of being completed so that the region is a place where the people and tourists can enjoy leisure time after the restoration of the rundown tower, and it is also intended to work on restoring the ceiling of the Chrysopolitissa Church.  Güngördü expressed thanks to Müge Şevketoğlu who guided the work, Ilkay Feridun, who was the consultant for the work, and Ayşe Baysal, the municipality employee organised the work to be carried out.

Ilkay Feridun, former Director of the Department of Antiquities and Museums, pointed out that there are many historical monuments in the area and that they should be identified and brought to life. Ilkay Feridun thanked Mayor Güngördü for his sensitivity by drawing attention to the work of the Municipality of Girne, and the work to be done by the museums in respect of old monuments related to the antique harbour. Feridun also emphasized that the documents given were a first, and said “Thanks to the documents, the employees will now be the people wanted in restoration work”.

Müge Şevketoğlu stated that the Municipality of Girne gave great importance to historical monuments and referred to the power substation which had become derelict and Mayor Güngördü who valued the old building arranged for it to be restored.  Müge Şevketoğlu thanked the Mayor and everyone who participated in the restoration.
