The festival held in the Bellapais Old School park area started today,  the 6th May and will end on Sunday.

Girne Municipality, organized with the Beylerbeyi Muhtarlığı and the Green Peace Movement the  “12. Cyprus Silk Cocoon Festival “starting today at Bellapais (Beylerbeyi). At the opening of the festival, the Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü, Ombudsperson Emine Dizdar, Beylerbeyi Muhtarı, Ersel Tatlısu and Green Peace Movement President, Dogan Sahir attended the opening ceremony.

The festival held at the Bellapais Village School and stands opened at 11:00 am and the municipality will carry the visitors to the venue. Silk worms and cocoons, as well as handicraft products produced with cocoons will be sold at the festival and there will be concerts and dance shows.

Güngördü:

Girne Mayor, Nidai Güngördü said in his opening speech that the cultivation of silk worm has an important place in Cypriot culture but forgotten, silk and cocoon handicrafts are starting to find life again with the festival. Güngördü noted that his goals were for this important skill to be kept alive and developed for future generations.

 Tatlısu:

Beylerbeyi Muhtarı, Ersel Tatlısu stated that the festival, which the Muhtarlığın initiated 12 years ago in cooperation with the Green Peace Movement, has realized the festival in a wider context with the support of the Girne Municipality for the last 8 years and said this has  contribution to the promotion of the village through the festival.

Doğan Sahir, President of the Green Peace Movement, said that the silk worm breeding and cocoon working are an important part of the country’s culture and have contributed to a review  of the natural and cultural values ​​of the Turkish Cypriot. He added that the relationship with the environment through this, can not be denied.
