Akıncı received French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development and Swedish and Finnish Ambassadors 

President Akıncı received the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Marc Ayrault who came to Cyprus to make official meetings.

President Mustafa Akıncı also received Sweden’s newly appointed Ambassador to Nicosia Anna Olsson and Finland’s Ambassador to Nicosia Timo Heino yesterday.

No statement was issued after the meetings.

Leaders to meet again today

Within the framework of the intensified Cyprus negotiations which aim to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades will meet again today at 18.30 at the buffer zone.

In his statement upon his return to the Presidency after the meeting, President Akıncı said that the active participation of both sides is important for a federally structured settlement in Cyprus, and added that decisions could not be taken by simple majority.

The Turkish Cypriot people express some of their demands due to past experiences in 1960s and 1974 coup, Akıncı said, and he emphasized that this is the reason why the Turkish Cypriot people are insisting on Turkey’s guarantee.

The next Leaders’ meeting will be held on 31 October 2016.

Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün expressed his full support for reaching a settlement before the end of 2016. As part of his routine weekly meetings, President Mustafa Akıncı received Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün yesterday.

Following the meeting, Özgürgün made a statement to the press and stated that there were some developments regarding the Cyprus issue that require people to come together more often. He said that he would evaluate the planned meeting in Switzerland in November.

Özgürgün stated that it will become clearer over the next few days who will attend the meeting and what their positions would be.

Eide: “We are in a critical period”

The UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide has said that, with regards to the Cyprus negotiations, “we are in the most critical period that we have ever experienced.”

Following the meeting with President Mustafa Akıncı yesterday, Eide said that they discussed the upcoming meetings, including the meeting to be held abroad between Akıncı and Anastasiades.

Eide reiterated that the current period was the most critical period in the Cyprus talks. “We try to use the time in the best way possible” he said.

Turkish Cypriot Negotiator Özdil Nami and the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative to Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar were also present at the meeting.
