“We will create a new structure with a solution” the Presidential Spokesperson Barış Burcu said while making evaluations regarding the Cyprus problem.

Pointing out that a solution to be found in Cyprus will not be a confederation or alteration of the Cyprus Republic, he stressed that a United Federal Cyprus with two founding states will be established within the framework of the 11 February 2014 joint Declaration.

Burcu also called on the Greek Cypriot leader to abstain from statements during the South Cyprus election process which would harm the solution process.

In a written statement, Presidential Spokesperson Barış Burcu drew attention to the fact that the election process in South Cyprus had started during the time when the negotiations process was continuing and expressed the hope that the Greek Cypriot leader will abstain from statements and distortions which would harm the negotiations process until May.

Pointing out that there was no change in the position of President Mustafa Akıncı on the Cyprus issue, he stressed that in this sense the 11 February 2014 consensus was crucially important.

“How a new state will come out was an issue which has always been discussed but remained inconclusive. Since the two sides do not recognize each other and we are not negotiating the confederation of two separate states, it is obvious that we will establish a United Federal Cyprus with two founding states. The 11 February 2014 consensus was clearly within this framework.” Burcu said.

“However, this does not mean that we have recognized or tied to amend the current Cyprus Republic which we have been excluded for many years and only represents the Greek Cypriot people today. On the contrary, as stated by our president on many occasions, we will create a new structure with a solution” he added.

Noting that it was important to bring the 70 percent of the Greek Cypriot people who said no to the Annan Plan to support a solution, Burcu however stated that it was also important that the majority of the Turkish Cypriot people who weren’t rewarded for its peace efforts will be reintegrated into a solution.
