Leaders to meet again today
President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades will meet again today within the framework of the Cyprus negotiations.
The meeting will be held at 18.00 in the buffer zone.
Economic and Monetary Policy Chapter was opened yesterday
After a two year standstill a new chapter was opened for Turkey in the accession negotiations to the European Union (EU) yesterday. Chapter 17 on “Economic and Monetary Policy” was opened with the intergovernmental conference in Brussels. Chapter 17 involves the implementation of the Maastricht economic criteria on debt and deficit, along with the independence of the National Central Bank.Presiding Minister Asselborn, of the EU rotating presidency welcomed this event, together with Enlargement Commissioner Hahn.
Turkey, being represented by three cabinet members, the Deputy Prime Minister amongst them, was applauded by the EU side. Deputy Prime Minister Şimşek made a series of statements on the accession process, saying that Turkey will do whatever it takes to become a member of the EU, while Ministers Volkan and Çavuşoğlu reiterated that the only choice that should be on the table is that of full membership.
The three cabinet members, presented to an audience of journalists and diplomats all the cooperation sectors between the EU and Turkey, the benefits for both sides, the fight against terrorism, the migration crisis and more, and expressed the hope that additional chapters would be opened soon.
Özyigit and Emiroğulları will compete for the General Presidency in TDP
The 5th Ordinary Congress of the Communal Democracy Party (TDP) will meet on Sunday. TDP leader, Cemal Özyiğit, and the Head of Gazimağusa District, Mustafa Emiroğulları, will run for the party leadership at the Congress.
The Congress will start at 10.00 at Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre at the Near East University (NEU) and 50-persons party assembly will be elected at the Congress. Applications for the party assembly membership will be continue until Friday.
Talat will attend the conference under the title “A United Cyprus is possible”
The leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Mehmet Ali Talat will attend the conference under the title “A United Cyprus is possible” in South Cyprus at the European Union Home. The leader of the Greek Cypriot Democratic Rally Party (DİSİ) Averof Neophytou will also be present at the event and both leaders will make speeches. The conference will start at 18:30.The conference which will be organized by the European Commission Representation in Cyprus and the Association of Social Reform – OPEK, will be open to the public.
Opening speeches will be given by the Head of the European Commission Representation in Nicosia George Markopoulitis and the head of the Association of Social Reform – OPEK Yiannis Tsouloftas.
The book which was written by Giovanni Mariti in the 18th century named “Travels in the Island of Cyprus” has been translated into Turkish by Gallery Cultural Publications. The first edition was published in Italian in 1760 and it was translated into English by Claude Delaval Cobham in 1895.
