Akıncı receives Desir
President Mustafa Akıncı has received France’s Minister of State for European Affairs Harlem Desir today.
Undersecretary of the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs Erhan Erçin and Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu were present during the meeting held at the Presidential Palace.
President Akıncı: “Solution can be reached within months”
President Mustafa Akıncı said that with this pace and with this determination, it will be a matter of months rather than years to solve Cyprus problem.
Stressing that Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots have seen each other as enemies for long years but this must change, Akıncı said that there was the same situation between Turkey and Greece in the past but many new opportunities can arise with a new understanding.
Within the framework of his high level contacts in Brussels, Akıncı met with President of European Council, President of European Parliament, President of European Commission and the chairman of some political groups and had interviews with Turkish and foreign journalists.
Akıncı returned to the TRNC this morning.
Erçin: “Akıncı had meetings with presidents of three most important institutions in EU”
Undersecretary of TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs and member of Turkish Cypriot negotiating team Erhan Erçin stated that President Mustafa Akıncı met with Presidents of the three most important institutions in the EU and was received by high level officials. Erçin pointed out that EU institutions deal with the crisis in Greece and due to their beliefs for a solution in Cyprus, they are interested in the Cyprus problem now.
Furthermore, Erçin added that they found the chance to explain their opinions and what should be done following a solution in the meetings held in Brussels.
Othello Castle restored
The reopening of the Othello Castle has long been a priority in the work of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. Structural consolidations and conservation works were implemented with the cooperation of the United Nations Development Programme Partnership for the Future and the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. The project cost slightly over one million euros, fully funded by the European Union. The opening ceremony of the castle was held last night.
Prime Minister Özkan Yorgancıoğlu, the Minister of Interior Affairs Teberrüken Uluçay, Gazimağusa Mayor İsmail Arter and many other senior officials and many guests from South Cyprus attended the opening ceremony.
Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot members of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, representatives of the European Union and United Nations made speeches during the ceremony.
Speakers Ali Tuncay and Takis Hadjdemetriou gave information about the history of the Othello Castle and the technical committee. Furthermore, Cihan Sultanoğlu and Normunds Popens spoke about the work of UNDP and EU.
