Akıncı met with Anastasiades today

President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Akinci and Anastasiades largeAnastasiades met again today within the framework of the negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus issue. The meeting started at 10:00 at the building assigned for the negotiations in the buffer zone under the UN control. The UN Secretary- General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide was also present at the meeting. Eide who will depart from the island on Friday will continue to negotiate with the related parties while he is in the island.

Akıncı: “We shall not give up our usurped right”

President Mustafa Akıncı pointed out that the Turkish Cypriot youngsters’ right of playing sports has been usurped Football Cyprus_3for many years and he added that “we will acquire these rights in the solution, but we will struggle for using these rights during the negotiation process”.  In the speech he made the previous night at the 2014-2015 Football Season Success Prizes Ceremony, Akıncı stated: “We gathered for rewarding the endeavour for a season.” He also stated that the rewards of Turkish Cypriot youngsters remained “local”.  Nonetheless, President Akıncı described that this is important, but inadequate.

Eide: “Everything which has been performed is encouraging”

UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide Espen Barth Eidepointed out that everything which has been performed is encouraging and he saw a sincere desire on both sides towards a settlement.

After the meeting with President Akıncı yesterday, Eide underlined that he has seen a real and sincere will and desire and he hasn’t seen such a thing for a long time. That’s why he called on the two leaders to use their time in the best way possible. He stated that they no longer have any time to waste.

President Mustafa Akıncı and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide held a meeting for about 1 hour 20 minutes prior to the meeting of the leaders.

Work started for opening of the border in Dherniya for crossings

Within the framework of negotiations and the meeting on May 28 held between President Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot administration leader Nikos Anastasiades and after the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide’s announcement of opening Lefke Aplıç border and Famagusta Dherniya border for crossings, work has started towards this direction.

The Minister of the Interior and Deputy Foreign Minister Teberrüken Uluçay visited Famagusta Dherniya border, which will be opened to mutual crossings.

Some Turkish and Greek representatives of political parties are organizing a trip to historical monuments in Famagusta today

Some Turkish and Greek representatives of political parties, who meet St Barnabas Monasteryat the buffer zone under the auspices of the Embassy of Slovakia, are organizing a trip today to some historical and touristic places in Famagusta area together with the UN and EU officials and members of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. Party representatives will go to St. Barnabas Monastery, then visit St. Elias Church in Mutluyaka and then will return to Nicosia. Slovak Ambassador Oksana Tomova’s Assistant Robert Chatrnuch and CTP-BG deputies will also participate in the trip.

Europe Day and Green Week were celebrated at the Selimiye Square

Europe Day, that highlights the importance of peace and unity in Europe and Green Week Expo, which brought EU’s Peace doveenvironmental policies to the agenda, took place at Selimiye Square in Nicosia last Saturday with the participation of representatives of the EU Member States and environmental organizations. The event, organized by the EU Information Centre hosted a large number of youth, educators, students, civil society activists and businessmen. The theme of this year’s Green Week “Nature and Biodiversity” subject brought a variety of environmental organizations and representatives of the EU member countries’ messages, success stories, and projects to the agenda, and  speeches made emphasized the importance of peace and unity.
